Overview
Officially, the Town of Mamaroneck consists of the Unincorporated Area (called The Town of Mamaroneck), the Village of Larchmont and the Village of Mamaroneck (which is west of the Mamaroneck River). All three of these communities are conveniently located under thirty minutes (by train) from Manhattan and offer great schools, parks and easy access to Long Island Sound, major highways and airports. The Town of Mamaroneck expands 5.17 square miles and has a population of 12,000 residents. The Village of Mamaroneck encompasses 2.33 square miles and has a population of close to 20,000 residents.
Mamaroneck is one of the oldest settlements in Westchester County originally settled by Native Americans. Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century residents earned their livelihoods by farming, fishing, lumbering, and milling. When manufacturing came to the Town, most was located (as it is today), in the Mamaroneck Village section. Larchmont Village and the Unincorporated Town were, and largely remain, residential.
The Village of Mamaroneck, specifically Mamaroneck Harbor, became a very important hub of commerce on Long Island Sound. Over the years, the high level of commercial activity attracted settlers from all over the world creating a vibrant mix of nationalities that still exists today. The harbor remains a very active port, primarily for pleasure boating, and has been developed to include a beautiful park called Harbor Island Park.
Harbor Island Park is a 32-acre public facility lined with Japanese cherry trees. The park contains tennis, soccer, and softball fields. There is beach access and many events are held here throughout the year for including Halloween parties, car shows and concerts.
Mamaroneck is also known for its beach/yacht clubs and prestigious country clubs including the Winged Foot Golf Club which hosted the 2006 US Golf Open.
Neighborhoods
Orienta is the waterfront neighborhood bordering Mamaroneck Harbor. The area has primarily older homes and also a mix of ranch and split-levels built in the 1950-1960’s. Shore Acres is another waterfront area in Mamaroneck offering large Colonials and Tudors with some smaller Capes as well. Each home in Shore Acres is able to access a shared pool and dock facility; some homes in this neighborhood are actually waterfront properties with deep-water docks. Shore Acres is located in what is known as the “Rye Neck” section of the Village.
Heathcote Hill is a section of Mamaroneck on a hill, north of the Boston Post Road, overlooking the harbor where the Battle of Heathcote took place. The homes in this area are large Colonials with beautiful porches and was once the home of Norman Rockwell. The Heights is in the northeastern corner of the Village and developed in the 1920’s. “The Flats,” also known as the Washingtonville area, is recognizable by its topography with all surrounding areas being at higher elevations. There is more commercial and industrial real estate located in this section of the town.
